Overview

Heard Island and McDonald Islands form an uninhabited Australian external territory in the southern Indian Ocean, about 4,100 kilometers southwest of mainland Australia, close to Antarctica. The territory's main island, Heard Island, is home to Big Ben, an active volcano rising to about 2,745 meters, Australia's highest peak, and the island is almost entirely covered by glaciers. The McDonald Islands, a smaller group nearby, are also volcanic in origin, and their surface changed significantly following an eruption in 2005. Australia has administered the territory since 1947, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, as the islands preserve one of the last sub-Antarctic ecosystems essentially untouched by human activity.

Heard Island is the only active volcanic island under Australian jurisdiction, and the ongoing volcanic activity of Big Ben makes the territory a significant site for geological research. The islands support rich sub-Antarctic wildlife, including large breeding populations of king penguins, elephant seals, and numerous seabird species, which have developed undisturbed due to the absence of human presence. Australian researchers periodically organize scientific expeditions to the territory, primarily to study volcanic activity and the effects of climate change on the glaciers.

Heard Island and McDonald Islands are essentially inaccessible to conventional travelers, with no port, airport, or permanent infrastructure, and landing is further complicated by harsh weather and rough seas. Historically, very few people have visited the islands, mainly participants in scientific expeditions and a small number of permitted polar voyages. Those interested in learning more can do so primarily through scientific publications and expedition reports.

Heard and McDonald Islands

#577 · 1997Earth's history and geological processes · Ecological and biological processes

Heard Island and McDonald Islands are located in the Southern Ocean, approximately 1,700 km from the Antarctic continent and 4,100 km south-west of Perth. As the only volcanically active subantarctic islands they ‘open a window into the earth’, thus providing the opportunity to observe ongoing geomorphic processes and glacial dynamics. The distinctive conservation value of Heard and McDonald – one of the world’s rare pristine island ecosystems – lies in the complete absence of alien plants and animals, as well as human impact.
