Slovak Paradise (Slovenský raj) is one of the most unique national parks in Central Europe. If you enjoy wild gorges, wooden walkways above mountain streams and metal ladders attached to steep rock walls, this place deserves a spot on your bucket list. We spent a few days here, and after almost every hike we thought, "It can't get any better than this." Then the next trail proved us wrong.

Suchá Belá Gorge

The park's most famous and most popular hiking trail.

Main highlights:

  • several waterfalls along the route
  • long metal ladders and wooden staircases
  • narrow canyon walls
  • trails following the stream bed

The scenery constantly changes, and because the hike stays close to the water for most of the way, it's the perfect introduction to Slovak Paradise.

Prielom Hornádu (Hernád Gorge)

One of the park's most unique trails, following the Hernád River through a spectacular canyon.

Main highlights:

  • metal walkways fixed to the rock walls
  • chains and wooden footbridges
  • beautiful views of the river
  • suspension bridges and narrow rocky passages

Walking above the river on the metal platforms is an unforgettable experience and one of the reasons this route is a favourite among hikers.

Piecky Gorge (Prielom Piecky)

A quieter but equally impressive gorge.

Main highlights:

  • the Great Waterfall (Veľký vodopád)
  • steep ladders
  • narrow canyons and moss-covered cliffs
  • peaceful, unspoilt surroundings

The atmosphere here feels much more remote, making it a great choice if you want to escape the crowds.

Veľký Sokol Gorge

The longest and one of the wildest gorges in the national park.

Main highlights:

  • more than ten waterfalls
  • a deep and narrow canyon
  • long ladder sections
  • untouched forest scenery

This route is a little more demanding physically, but it rewards hikers with some of the most spectacular scenery in the park.

Tomášovský výhľad Viewpoint

The most famous panoramic viewpoint in Slovak Paradise.

Main highlights:

  • a dramatic rocky ledge
  • sweeping views over the Hernád Valley
  • one of the best spots for sunset photography

The hike to the viewpoint is short and easy, making it a great option even if you're only spending half a day in the area.

Useful Tips

  • Most gorges are one-way routes, so check the trail directions before setting off.
  • After rain, the ladders and metal walkways can become slippery.
  • Good hiking shoes and a little sense of adventure will go a long way.

For us, Slovak Paradise lived up to its name: wild gorges, rushing waterfalls and trails that stay in your memory long after you've left. If you enjoy adventurous but non-technical mountain hikes, this national park is a destination you should experience at least once.
