Overview

Akrotiri and Dhekelia is a British Overseas Territory made up of two separate areas on the island of Cyprus, retained by Britain as sovereign military base areas at the time of Cyprus's independence in 1960, unlike the rest of the island, which became an independent state. Akrotiri lies on the southern coast, near Limassol, while Dhekelia is located in the southeast, near Larnaca, with territory belonging to the Republic of Cyprus lying between the two, both administratively and in practice. About 7,500 people live in the territory, a significant portion of whom are British military personnel and their families, along with Cypriot citizens residing in villages located within the base areas. The official language is English, and the territory has no legislature of its own, falling instead under military administration.

Within the Akrotiri area lies Lady's Mile Beach, a long sandy beach that remains partly open for civilian use despite being part of a military zone. The Akrotiri Salt Lake, one of the island's largest wetlands, hosts thousands of pink flamingos in winter, when they migrate here to feed. Near Dhekelia lies the ancient ruined city of Kition, preserving archaeological layers from the Bronze Age through the Byzantine period, though this site falls within the territory of the Republic of Cyprus rather than the British base area. Former British colonial buildings and military installations within the base areas stand as tangible reminders of the Cold War and earlier British presence.

The Akrotiri Salt Lake and its surrounding wetland form a significant birdwatching site in the eastern Mediterranean, particularly during the winter months, when flamingos are joined by large numbers of other waterbird species. Due to the territory's limited civilian access, most visitors experience the base areas only while passing through along the main road routes, as most of the military zones remain off-limits to the public. Local cuisine, as far as the civilian population is concerned, is essentially the same as Greek Cypriot cuisine, since most residents of the villages within the territory are of Cypriot origin.
