Overview

The Åland Islands lie in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Sweden, an archipelago made up of roughly 6,500 islands and skerries, though only a few dozen are inhabited. While administratively part of Finland, the population speaks almost exclusively Swedish, and the islands enjoy broad autonomy, complete with their own parliament and flag. A close connection to the sea, deep-rooted seafaring traditions, and a slow, rural pace of life define the character of the archipelago, making it one of the Baltic region's lesser-known yet easily accessible destinations.

Mariehamn, the capital, offers a pleasant small-town atmosphere with wooden villas and tree-lined streets, and is home to the preserved four-masted sailing ship Pommern, a reminder of the islands' seafaring golden age. The medieval ruins of Kastelholm Castle, along with the neighboring Jan Karlsgården open-air museum, offer insight into the region's history. The fortress of Bomarsund, which commemorates a 19th-century Russo-British conflict, now stands as picturesque ruins and ranks among the islands' most popular historical sites.

The archipelago's maze-like waterways are ideal for sailing and kayaking, and its calm bays and countless small islands have made it one of the most popular sailing destinations in the Baltic. Cycling is also popular, since the islands are connected by bridges and ferries, allowing visitors to island-hop by bike over several days. Local cuisine leans heavily on seafood, with fresh fish and shellfish as staples, alongside traditional pannkaka, an Åland-style pancake, and cider made from the region's own apple orchards.
