Overview
Burundi is a landlocked country in East Africa's Great Lakes region, bordered by Tanzania, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its western border runs along Lake Tanganyika, one of Africa's deepest lakes, whose shores are central to daily life and fishing. The population is predominantly Hutu, with smaller Tutsi and Twa (pygmy) communities, and the official languages are Kirundi, French, and English. Burundi gained independence from Belgium in 1962, having previously been part of the Belgian colony of Ruanda-Urundi.
Burundi has two capitals: Gitega has served as the political capital since 2019, while Bujumbura, the former capital on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, remains the country's economic and commercial center. Bujumbura's old town, with buildings dating from the colonial era and a promenade facing the lake, offers a glimpse into everyday city life. The Gishora Drum Sanctuary, near Gitega, is a center of traditional Burundian royal drumming, where ceremonial drumming performances can be seen. Rusizi National Park, at the point where the Rusizi River flows into Lake Tanganyika, is home to hippos and crocodiles.
Along the shores of Lake Tanganyika, particularly around Bujumbura, sandy beaches alternate with fishing villages, and the lake is home to several hundred endemic fish species, including numerous cichlids. The rainforest of Kibira National Park shelters chimpanzees and several other primate species, forming the eastern extension of the Congo rainforest system. Traditional Burundian drumming, recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2014, features at ceremonies, weddings, and state occasions alike. Local cuisine is built around bananas, cassava, and beans, with ubugali, a paste made from cornmeal or cassava flour, as a signature dish, served with a vegetable or meat-based sauce.
