Overview

The Central African Republic is a landlocked country in Central Africa, bordering Chad, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, and Cameroon. The country's landscape features savanna in the north and the northern extension of the Congo Basin rainforest in the south. France administered the territory as a colony until 1960 under the name Ubangi-Shari, and this French colonial legacy still shapes the official language, French, alongside Sango, the national language spoken by most of the population. The country ranks among the poorest and most politically unstable in the world, and ongoing armed conflict has severely limited the development of tourism.

Bangui, the capital on the banks of the Ubangi River, is the country's commercial and administrative center, home to the Notre-Dame Cathedral and a riverside market. Manovo-Gounda St. Floris National Park, in the north of the country, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988, though it is currently listed as endangered due to poaching and wildlife decline linked to armed conflict. The Dzanga-Sangha Special Dense Forest Reserve, in the southwest, forms part of the Congo Basin rainforest and is home to lowland gorillas and forest elephants. The traditional forest lifestyle and hunting techniques of the Ba'aka pygmy communities in the Bayanga area are also part of the region's cultural heritage.

The salt clearings of the Dzanga-Sangha reserve, known as "bais," regularly attract forest elephants, which gather in open clearings to supplement their mineral intake, making this one of the more accessible wildlife-viewing experiences in the dense rainforest. Guided visits to Ba'aka communities offer insight into traditional gathering and hunting practices and knowledge of forest plants. Local cuisine is built around cassava and millet, with spiced, palm oil-based meat or fish sauces as signature dishes, served with a thick grain-based paste similar to fufu.

Manovo-Gounda St Floris National Park

#475 · 1988Ecological and biological processes · Natural habitat and biodiversity⚠ On the Danger List

The importance of this park derives from its wealth of flora and fauna. Its vast savannahs are home to a wide variety of species: black rhinoceroses, elephants, cheetahs, leopards, wild dogs, red-fronted gazelles and buffalo, while various types of waterfowl are to be found in the northern floodplains.

Natural

Sangha Trinational

#1380 · 2012Ecological and biological processes · Natural habitat and biodiversityTransboundary site

Situated in the north-western Congo Basin, where Cameroon, Central African Republic and Congo meet, the site encompasses three contiguous national parks totalling around 750,000 ha. Much of the site is unaffected by human activity and features a wide range of humid tropical forest ecosystems with rich flora and fauna, including Nile crocodiles and goliath tigerfish, a large predator. Forest clearings support herbaceous species and Sangha is home to considerable populations of forest elephants, critically endangered western lowland gorilla, and endangered chimpanzee. The site’s environment has preserved the continuation of ecological and evolutionary processes on a huge scale and great biodiversity, including many endangered animal species.
