Overview

The Democratic Republic of the Congo lies in Central Africa, covering an area of about 2,345,000 square kilometers, making it the second-largest country on the continent after Algeria. Much of the country is covered by the rainforest of the Congo Basin, the second-largest contiguous tropical rainforest in the world after the Amazon. The Congo River, which forms the country's backbone, ranks among Africa's longest rivers and is considered the deepest river in the world along parts of its course. The country was administered as a Belgian colony from 1908 to 1960, having previously operated as the personal property of Belgian King Leopold II under the name Congo Free State, a period that left behind a severe historical legacy of colonial exploitation and violence.

💡 Not to be confused with the neighboring Republic of the Congo; the Democratic Republic of the Congo is sometimes referred to as Congo-Kinshasa, after its capital.

Kinshasa, the capital, sits on the banks of the Congo River directly across from Brazzaville, the capital of the neighboring Republic of the Congo, making them the closest pair of national capitals in the world. Virunga National Park, Africa's oldest national park, founded in 1925, remains one of the last habitats of the mountain gorilla and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. Garamba National Park, also a UNESCO World Heritage site, was once home to the last wild population of the northern white rhinoceros before the subspecies went extinct in the wild. Near the mouth of the Congo River, the Livingstone Falls form a dramatic, rocky stretch of rapids that ranks among the most difficult sections of river to navigate on the continent.

The rainforest of the Congo Basin is one of the largest carbon sinks in the world and is home to numerous endemic species, including the bonobo, one of the primates most closely related to humans genetically, found only in wild populations south of the Congo River. Kahuzi-Biega National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most important habitats for the eastern lowland gorilla. Local cuisine is built around cassava and fufu, a thick paste made from it, served with a vegetable or meat-based sauce, often prepared with palm oil.

Zaire

The country officially existed under the name Zaire from 1971 to 1997, a name introduced by dictator Mobutu Sese Seko as part of his "authenticité" policy, aimed at symbolically dismantling the Belgian colonial legacy, which also renamed the capital from Léopoldville to Kinshasa and the river from Congo to Zaire. Mobutu seized power in a 1965 military coup and ruled for more than three decades, his regime marked by widespread corruption, authoritarian rule, and a personality cult, while the country's economy gradually collapsed. The First and Second Congo Wars, which erupted in the mid-1990s and drew in numerous neighboring states in the region, ultimately led to Mobutu's downfall in 1997, after which the country restored the name Democratic Republic of the Congo, though political instability and armed conflict in the eastern provinces have never fully ceased since.

Ebola outbreaks

The Democratic Republic of the Congo was the site of the first documented outbreak of the Ebola virus in 1976, near the Ebola River, from which the virus takes its name, and the country has since become one of the most frequent hotspots for the disease, with close to twenty smaller and larger outbreaks over the following decades. The epidemic that broke out in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces between 2018 and 2020 was for a long time the country's most severe Ebola outbreak on record, with about 2,280 deaths, though in 2026 an outbreak that began in Ituri Province, caused by the rarer Bundibugyo virus strain, for which no approved vaccine or targeted treatment exists, surpassed it in case numbers. Containment efforts in both instances were significantly hampered by regional armed conflict and public distrust, though the country's health system and its cooperation with international organizations have built up considerable experience in outbreak management, making the Democratic Republic of the Congo an important reference point in global Ebola research.

Virunga National Park

#63 · 1979Natural beauty and aesthetic importance · Earth's history and geological processes · Natural habitat and biodiversity⚠ On the Danger List

Virunga National Park (covering an area of 790,000 ha) comprises an outstanding diversity of habitats, ranging from swamps and steppes to the snowfields of Rwenzori at an altitude of over 5,000 m, and from lava plains to the savannahs on the slopes of volcanoes. Mountain gorillas are found in the park, some 20,000 hippopotamuses live in the rivers and birds from Siberia spend the winter there.

Natural

Kahuzi-Biega National Park

#137 · 1980Natural habitat and biodiversity⚠ On the Danger List

A vast area of primary tropical forest dominated by two spectacular extinct volcanoes, Kahuzi and Biega, the park has a diverse and abundant fauna. One of the last groups of eastern lowland (graueri) gorillas (consisting of only some 250 individuals) lives at between 2,100 and 2,400 m above sea-level.

Natural

Garamba National Park

#136 · 1980Natural beauty and aesthetic importance · Natural habitat and biodiversity⚠ On the Danger List

The park's immense savannahs, grasslands and woodlands, interspersed with gallery forests along the river banks and the swampy depressions, are home to four large mammals: the elephant, giraffe, hippopotamus and above all the white rhinoceros. Though much larger than the black rhino, it is harmless; only some 30 individuals remain.

Natural

Salonga National Park

#280 · 1984Natural beauty and aesthetic importance · Ecological and biological processes

Salonga National Park is Africa's largest tropical rainforest reserve. Situated at the heart of the central basin of the Congo river, the park is very isolated and accessible only by water. It is the habitat of many endemic endangered species, such as the dwarf chimpanzee, the Congo peacock, the forest elephant and the African slender-snouted or 'false' crocodile.

Natural

Okapi Wildlife Reserve

#718 · 1996Natural habitat and biodiversity⚠ On the Danger List

The Okapi Wildlife Reserve occupies about one-fifth of the Ituri forest in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Congo river basin, of which the reserve and forest are a part, is one of the largest drainage systems in Africa. The reserve contains threatened species of primates and birds and about 5,000 of the estimated 30,000 okapi surviving in the wild. It also has some dramatic scenery, including waterfalls on the Ituri and Epulu rivers. The reserve is inhabited by traditional nomadic pygmy Mbuti and Efe hunters.
