Overview

The Commonwealth of Dominica lies in the eastern Lesser Antilles, between Guadeloupe and Martinique, and is often called "the Nature Island of the Caribbean" due to its dense, volcanic rainforest covering most of the terrain. The country gained independence from Britain in 1978, and the official language is English, though part of the population also speaks a French-based Creole reflecting the island's earlier period under French colonial presence. The island has some of the least developed tourism infrastructure in the region, lacking the large white sand beaches found on neighboring islands, with its mountainous volcanic landscape and hiking opportunities forming the main draw instead. Dominica is the only Caribbean island where a community of the original Carib indigenous population, the Kalinago people, still lives today, with a designated area known as the Kalinago Territory.

💡 The Commonwealth of Dominica (Dominica) is not to be confused with the neighboring Dominican Republic (on the island of Hispaniola); the two are entirely separate countries with different histories and languages.

Dominica's rainforests and rivers provide excellent hiking terrain, and the Waitukubuli National Trail, running the full length of the island, is one of the longest continuous hiking trails in the Caribbean. The island's coastline, particularly on the Caribbean Sea side, offers excellent diving opportunities, with its volcanic seafloor and a "champagne reef" phenomenon, geothermal gas bubbles rising from the seabed, offering a distinctive experience. Sperm whales can be observed in the coastal waters between November and March, forming a resident population present around Dominica year-round, a rare occurrence worldwide. Local cuisine blends Caribbean, French, and African influences, with "mountain chicken," actually the legs of a large frog species, as a traditional dish, though its consumption is now restricted for conservation reasons.

Dominica's waters are legendary among divers — the Champagne Reef near Soufrière gets its name from the thousands of tiny volcanic bubbles that rise from the seabed, creating an extraordinary underwater experience unlike anywhere else. The island's rivers and waterfalls invite swimming in Emerald Pool and Titou Gorge, where the Pirates of the Caribbean films were partly shot. Whale watching is exceptional here too: sperm whales reside year-round in the deep waters off the island's western coast, making Dominica one of the world's best whale-watching destinations.
