Overview

Equatorial Guinea lies in Central Africa and consists of two main parts: the mainland region of Río Muni, situated between Cameroon and Gabon, and the island of Bioko in the Atlantic Ocean, home to the capital, Malabo. The country was colonized by Spain until 1968, making it the only African state where Spanish is an official language, alongside French and Portuguese. Its economy was transformed by the discovery of significant oil and gas reserves in the mid-1990s, resulting in a high per capita GDP, though this income has not been distributed equally across the population. Most of the population is of Bantu origin, with the Fang as the largest ethnic group.

💡 Note: Equatorial Guinea is not to be confused with neighboring Guinea or Guinea-Bissau; all three countries have different colonial histories and official languages. Equatorial Guinea is the only country in Africa where Spanish is an official language.

Malabo, the capital on Bioko Island, features Spanish colonial-style buildings and sits close to the island's volcanic landscape, serving as its administrative and cultural center. Bata, the largest city in the mainland Río Muni region, is the country's economic hub, its modern buildings reflecting development funded by oil revenue. Monte Alén National Park, in the mainland rainforest, is home to gorillas, chimpanzees, and numerous endemic plant species, though underdeveloped tourism infrastructure means visits require significant planning. Bioko's volcanic mountains, including Pico Basilé, the country's highest peak at about 3,011 meters, shelter the island's less-explored interior.

Bioko Island's beaches rank among the most significant sea turtle nesting sites in the world, with several turtle species laying eggs there mainly between November and March. The rainforests of mainland Río Muni form the western extension of the Congo Basin rainforest system, home to rich yet little-explored wildlife, including forest elephants and numerous primate species. The country's tourism infrastructure remains largely underdeveloped, with most visits tied to business, mainly the oil industry, making tourism a relatively rare activity that requires careful planning. Local cuisine blends Spanish and Bantu influences, with dishes made from palm oil and spiced fish or meat stews as signature items, often served with cassava or plantain.
