Overview

Liberia lies in West Africa on the Atlantic coast, between Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Côte d'Ivoire. The country was uniquely founded in 1822 through the initiative of the American Colonization Society, which established the territory to resettle freed American slaves, making Liberia the only African country founded by free African Americans and one that was never a European colony in the traditional sense. The country's name itself references freedom, derived from the Latin word "liber." Liberia gained independence in 1847, becoming Africa's first independent republic. The official language is English, though numerous local African languages are also spoken, and the country endured two civil wars between 1989 and 2003, which caused severe destruction.

Monrovia, the capital, named after U.S. President James Monroe, preserves the legacy of the original Americo-Liberian settlers in its buildings and street names, though the civil wars caused significant damage to the city. Providence Island, off the coast of Monrovia, is where the first group of freed slaves landed in 1822, making it a symbolic site in the country's national history. Sapo National Park, in the southeastern part of the country, is West Africa's largest remaining stretch of untouched rainforest and one of the region's last significant refuges of biodiversity. Robertsport, on the coast, has become known as a surfing destination, drawing mainly international surfers.

The rainforest of Sapo National Park is home to elephants, chimpanzees, and the rare pygmy hippopotamus, though underdeveloped tourism infrastructure means visits require significant planning and preparation. Liberia's coastline, particularly around Robertsport, has become an increasingly popular destination among surfers thanks to consistent waves, while underdeveloped infrastructure has kept the area relatively unspoiled and less crowded. The country's rainforests form part of the West African Guinean forests ecoregion, one of the continent's most biodiverse yet also most threatened habitats. Local cuisine is built around rice and cassava, with spiced tomato- or palm oil-based meat or fish stews as signature dishes, often seasoned with hot chili peppers.
