Overview

Wallis and Futuna is a French overseas collectivity in the South Pacific, located between Fiji and Samoa, made up of two island groups roughly 260 kilometers apart: Wallis (Uvea) and Futuna, along with their smaller surrounding islands. The territory falls under French administration, with French as the official language, alongside the Wallisian and Futunan Polynesian languages spoken locally. A traditional monarchy system also persists on the islands: local kings, known as "lavelua" on Wallis, hold a symbolic role alongside the French administration.

Mata-Utu, on Wallis Island, serves as the territory's capital and administrative center, where the royal palace and the Catholic cathedral reflect the blend of French and Polynesian influence. The lagoon surrounding Wallis Island, enclosed by a coral reef, contains numerous smaller islets. On Futuna Island lies the grave of Saint Peter Chanel, who was martyred on the island in 1841 and canonized in 1954; the basilica associated with him draws Catholic pilgrims from the region.

The coral reefs of the Wallis lagoon are suited to diving and snorkeling, with colorful fish and coral formations visible in the coastal waters. Futuna's more mountainous, volcanic terrain, with denser vegetation and steeper relief, contrasts with the flatter landscape of Wallis. Local cuisine is built on Polynesian staples, with taro, yam, and fish cooked in coconut milk as signature dishes, traditionally prepared in large quantities in an underground oven for ceremonial occasions known as katoaga.
