Overview
Djibouti lies in East Africa, at the meeting point of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, bordered by Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia. The country's strategic location near the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, gives it significant importance in global trade, and several countries, including France, the United States, China, and Japan, maintain military bases in the capital. France administered the territory as a colony until 1977 under the name French Somaliland, and this colonial legacy still shapes the official language, French, alongside Arabic. The population is predominantly Somali and Afar in ethnicity, and the majority religion is Islam.
Djibouti City, the country's capital and main port, is the center of commercial life, with French colonial-era buildings and a busy harbor. Lake Assal, lying about 155 meters below sea level, is the lowest point in Africa and one of the saltiest lakes on Earth, its surface covered in white salt crystals amid a volcanic landscape. The Gulf of Ghoubbet, near Lake Assal, forms a lesser-visited yet geologically active part of the Red Sea, where the African and Arabian tectonic plates are pulling apart. Day Forest National Park, one of the country's last remaining mountain forests, is home to endemic plant species within an otherwise arid, desert landscape.
The waters of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden offer excellent diving opportunities, and whale sharks are frequently observed around the Gulf of Tadjoura between November and January, when they migrate to the region's plankton-rich waters to feed. Lake Assal and the surrounding volcanic landscape, including the Ardoukoba volcano, rank among the most geologically active areas in the world, sitting at the junction of three tectonic plates. Local cuisine blends Somali and Arab influences, with spiced fish and meat dishes as signature items, often served with rice or injera, a fermented flatbread.
