Overview
The Isle of Man lies in the middle of the Irish Sea, between England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, as a British Crown Dependency. The territory has its own parliament, the Tynwald, said by tradition to have been founded by Vikings in 979, making it one of the oldest continuously functioning legislative bodies in the world. The island has its own Celtic language, Manx (Gaelg), which lost its last native speakers by the mid-20th century but has since been revived and is taught and spoken again through revitalization programs. The official language is English, and its own currency, the Manx pound, is pegged to the British pound.
he Isle of Man is not part of the United Kingdom but a British Crown Dependency, with its own legislature and legal system.
Douglas, the island's capital, with its Victorian-era seafront promenade and a horse-drawn tramway operating since 1873, serves as the Isle of Man's administrative and commercial center. The Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy), held annually on the island's road circuit since 1907, is one of the most dangerous and best-known motorcycle races in the world, drawing tens of thousands of international visitors each June. Peel Castle, a medieval fortress in the town of Peel on the island's western coast, holds both Celtic and Viking-era archaeological remains. The Laxey Wheel, also known as "Lady Isabella," built in 1854 for mining purposes, is one of the largest working waterwheels in the world.
The Isle of Man's coastline, particularly in the south and west, offers excellent hiking amid steep cliffs and bays along the Raad ny Foillan trail, which follows the island's entire coastline. Dolphins and basking sharks, the second-largest fish species in the world, can be observed in the surrounding waters during summer. The entire island has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2016, reflecting an emphasis on balancing sustainable development with nature conservation. Local cuisine is built around seafood, with Manx kippers, smoked herring, and queenies, small scallops, as signature dishes, often prepared with local butter and lemon.
