Overview

Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, lying in the English Channel close to the coast of Normandy, France, as a British Crown Dependency. For centuries the island belonged to the Duchy of Normandy, and when William the Conqueror took England in 1066, the Channel Islands became part of the British Crown while never fully merging into the United Kingdom. The official language is English, though the traditional Jersey French dialect, Jèrriais, is still spoken by a small number of people, mainly among the older generation. Jersey's financial services sector, including its favorable tax environment, has become one of the island's most important economic sectors since World War II.

Jersey is not part of the United Kingdom but a British Crown Dependency, with its own legislature and legal system.

Saint Helier, the island's capital, with its harbor and Elizabeth Castle, built on a rocky headland that becomes an island at high tide, serves as Jersey's administrative and commercial center. Mont Orgueil Castle, a medieval fortress in the town of Gorey on the island's eastern coast, defended Jersey for centuries during periods of French-English conflict. World War II German fortifications and bunkers, recalling the memory of the Nazi occupation of the Channel Islands, remain visible in several parts of the island, as Jersey was one of the few British territories actually occupied by German forces, between 1940 and 1945. Jersey Zoo, founded by naturalist Gerald Durrell in 1959, is an internationally recognized institution specializing in the conservation of endangered species.

Jersey's coastline experiences one of the largest tidal ranges in the world, with differences of up to 12 meters, a phenomenon that at low tide reveals vast stretches of sand and rock that can be explored on foot. Saint Ouen's Bay, on the island's western coast, with its long sandy beach, is a popular spot for surfing. The rocky coves and caves along the island's southern coast, such as Devil's Hole, can be explored by kayak or guided tour. Local cuisine blends French and British influences, with the Jersey Royal potato, the only potato variety in Britain with protected geographical status, and buttery, cream-based dishes made from the milk of the Jersey cattle breed, as signature items.
