Overview
The Northern Mariana Islands form a chain in the western Pacific, north of Guam, and as a commonwealth of the United States consist of fourteen islands, though the vast majority of the population lives on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. The region's history reflects layers of Spanish, German, Japanese, and American colonial rule, still visible today in the architecture, place names, and cultural customs. A blend of indigenous Chamorro and Carolinian traditions with American lifestyle gives the islands a distinctive identity, and they are visited mainly by tourists from Asia, particularly Japan and South Korea.
Saipan, the largest and most populous island in the chain, holds numerous WWII memorial sites, including American Memorial Park and the dramatic Banzai Cliff, where many Japanese soldiers and civilians leapt to their deaths at the end of the battle for the island. On Tinian, North Field, the airstrip from which the Enola Gay departed in 1945 to bomb Hiroshima, stands as one of the most significant historical sites of World War II. Rota, which largely escaped the fighting, offers a quieter, less-visited alternative, with unspoiled natural surroundings and the ancient Chamorro ruins of the Taga Stone site.
The islands' coral reefs and clear water make the region an excellent destination for diving and snorkeling, with the Grotto near Saipan, a submerged limestone cavern, ranking among the world's most spectacular cave diving sites. The Mariana Trench, the deepest point in the world's oceans, lies not far from the islands, making the region scientifically significant for deep-sea research. Local cuisine blends Chamorro, Asian, and American influences, with kelaguen and barbecued beef as signature dishes, often served during local fiesta celebrations accompanied by live music.
