Overview
Guadeloupe is an archipelago in the eastern Lesser Antilles, whose two main islands, Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, separated by a narrow sea channel called the Rivière Salée, together form a butterfly-like shape. The territory also includes a few smaller islands, including Marie-Galante and the Les Saintes island group. France has administered the territory as an overseas department since 1946, giving it the same administrative status as a department in mainland France and making it a full member of both the European Union and the eurozone. The official language is French, though most of the population also speaks Antillean Creole, a French-based Creole language, in everyday communication.
Basse-Terre, the archipelago's political capital, though not its largest town, features French colonial-style buildings and stands at the base of the towering La Soufrière volcano, serving as the center of the island's western region. La Soufrière, a still-active volcano rising to about 1,467 meters, is Guadeloupe's highest point, and the trail to its summit reveals sulfurous steam vents and a moon-like landscape. Pointe-à-Pitre, the archipelago's largest and economically most important town, on Grande-Terre, is the center of commercial life, with lively markets and a busy harbor. The Les Saintes islands, a small cluster with architecture reminiscent of Breton fishing villages, form one of the territory's most scenic areas.
Guadeloupe National Park, covering the rainforest-covered interior of Basse-Terre, offers hiking amid waterfalls, including the Carbet Falls, and dense tropical vegetation. Coastal coral reefs and the Cousteau Reserve, named after French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, offer excellent diving opportunities around Pigeon Island. Marie-Galante, with its slower pace of life and sugarcane plantations, is a well-preserved example of traditional Antillean rural life. Local cuisine blends Creole, French, and African influences, with colombo, a curry-style spiced meat dish, and boudin créole, a spiced blood sausage, as signature dishes, often accompanied by rum, as Guadeloupe is a significant rum-producing region.
