Saint Barthélemy

Overview

Saint-Barthélemy is a small island in the eastern Caribbean, at the northern end of the Lesser Antilles, and a French overseas collectivity. The island was administered by Sweden from 1784 to 1878 before reverting to French rule, a period still reflected in the name of its capital, Gustavia, and in a few street names of Swedish origin. The official language is French and the official currency is the euro, as the island falls administratively under France and is therefore part of the European Union. The island is a popular destination for the French and American jet set, which is also reflected in its high price level.

Gustavia, the island's capital and main harbor, carries the memory of its Swedish colonial past in its name, while its present character is shaped by French-style shops and restaurants around the port. The island's highest point, Morne du Vitet, rises to about 286 meters, with views over neighboring islands from its summit. Colombier Bay, reachable only on foot or by boat, is among the island's less developed and quieter stretches of coastline.

Saint-Barthélemy's coastline is lined with about 14 beaches, several of which, including Saline and Gouverneur, are officially recognized nudist beaches. In the waters around the island, particularly near Île Fourchue, snorkeling and diving reveal coral reefs and sea turtles. Local cuisine is strongly French in influence, with restaurants blending French and Caribbean flavors, and fresh fish and seafood dishes as signature items, often served with French wines.
