Sint Maarten
America · Caribbean
Overview
Sint Maarten occupies the Dutch side of an island in the northern Lesser Antilles, divided under an agreement dating to 1648 between France and the Netherlands, one of the oldest continuously maintained territorial divisions in the world between two different European powers. The Dutch side has functioned as a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands since 2010, with its own government and legislature, while defense and most foreign affairs remain the Netherlands' responsibility; it was previously part of the Netherlands Antilles. The official languages are Dutch and English, though English dominates everyday communication, differing from the French side of the island. The official currency is the Netherlands Antillean guilder, though the U.S. dollar is also widely accepted.
Sint Maarten is a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and is not part of the European Union. The island is divided: the southern Dutch side is known as Sint Maarten, and the northern French side as Saint-Martin, two separate administrative territories without a shared border checkpoint.
Philipsburg, the capital of the Dutch side, with Dutch colonial-style buildings and a busy harbor regularly visited by cruise ships, serves as the island's commercial and tourism center. Maho Beach, located directly alongside the runway of Princess Juliana International Airport, where landing aircraft pass low over the heads of beachgoers, is one of the island's best-known, most frequently photographed, and most unusual tourist attractions. Fort Amsterdam, the ruins of a 17th-century Dutch fortress managed by the Sint Maarten National Heritage Foundation, near Philipsburg, is a memorial site of the island's colonial past. The Dutch side's casinos and nightlife, particularly around Philipsburg and Simpson Bay, offer one of the more lively entertainment scenes in the Caribbean.
The Dutch side's coral reefs and clear waters offer excellent diving and snorkeling, including numerous shipwrecks, some deliberately sunk to serve as artificial reefs. Simpson Bay Lagoon, one of the largest protected lagoons in the Caribbean, is excellent for sailing and water sports and also plays a significant role in the region as a yacht harbor. The island's hilly interior also offers shorter hiking trails, with panoramic views over both the Dutch and French sides. Local cuisine blends Caribbean, Dutch, and international influences, with fresh fish dishes and cocktails made from local rum as signature items, and international cuisine is also widely available given the island's tourism orientation.
