Saint Martin
America · Caribbean
Overview
Saint-Martin occupies the French side of an island in the northern Lesser Antilles, divided under an agreement dating to 1648 between France and the Netherlands, one of the oldest continuously maintained territorial divisions in the world between two different European powers. The French side has operated as an overseas collectivity of France since 2007, having previously been part of Guadeloupe, and now functions as a separate administrative territory with greater local autonomy. The official language is French, though English and Caribbean Creole languages are also widely used in everyday communication, as both halves of the island are heavily tourism-oriented and international in character. The French side uses the euro, while the neighboring Dutch side uses a different currency, and the border between the two remains practically open for everyday travel.
Saint-Martin is an overseas collectivity of France (collectivité d'outre-mer) in the Caribbean. The island is divided: the northern French side is known as Saint-Martin, and the southern Dutch side as Sint Maarten, two separate administrative territories without a shared border checkpoint.
Marigot, the capital of the French side, with its French colonial-style buildings and lively market, serves as the commercial and administrative center of the island's French half. Fort Saint Louis, an 18th-century fortress overlooking Marigot, stands as a reminder of the island's French-Dutch division and colonial history, offering panoramic views over the bay. Grand Case, the culinary center of the French side, home to numerous restaurants specializing in French cuisine, has earned the nickname "the gourmet capital of the Caribbean" in local tourism marketing. Orient Bay, on the eastern coast of the French side, with its long sandy beach and lively water sports scene, is one of the island's most popular beach destinations.
The coral reefs and clear waters of the French side offer excellent diving and snorkeling, and Tintamarre Island, part of the French side's nature reserve, preserves relatively unspoiled marine life as an uninhabited island. Loterie Farm, a former plantation in the island's interior, now functions as an adventure park and starting point for hiking trails exploring the island's mountainous interior. Beaches on the French side tend to be less crowded and developed than the more urban Dutch side, known for its casinos and larger hotels. Local cuisine is strongly French-influenced, blended with Caribbean ingredients, with fresh fish dishes and French-style pastries as signature items, often served alongside local rum.
